Rogue Hopes

Recommended Posts

(Going to just start a topic on all classes so people can have a central topic to just dump their hopes into if devs want to skim them for ideas)

As someone who played Rogue for awhile in World of Warcraft, Nightblade in Elder Scrolls Online and Ninja in Final Fantasy 14 I highly enjoy the single target debuff that comes with it, poisons, sleeps, disembowels, slicing tendons to lower movement and attack speed whilst dishing out incredibly high single target damage.

I hope some of the aspects make it into the game, bunch of stealth and some high as HECK single target damage!

Please reply with some of your own personal hopes!

i always naturally go for the ninja/assassin/rogue type classes in any game i play. i just love having the high risk high reward way of playing, so dishing out big damage whilst being squishy as hell, and im hoping thats the sort of class rogue turns out to be. also pretty fun when you can engage and disengage enemies with ease

but ultimately as long as i can be an adorable dual dagger-weilding loli im happy

I also always played rogue in WoW and I prefer having the most CC and utility to provide in a party. As mentioned above , high risk high reward is also something that suits me. I hope the rogue class in this game will have a similar stealth functionality as in WoW and that it will feel like a true assassin class.

Won't be playing rogue. Only thing I ask is: please no stealth. Every game I played, where a class has stealth, it's either OP, or annoying as ***t.
I can't see the enjoyment of pvp'ing against someone who can stealth, if he/she is about to die, and heal back up. Or always guaranteed to get first engage. It can be balanced, but I always feel it get broken one way or another in games.

Really never liked it.

That's the strength of a rogue, without stealth they have no way to engage. They are always the most squishy class in a MMORPG and therefor having stealth is their only escape / way out. After their initial engage, they have nothing in their toolkit anymore. I can see where you're coming from when you say they are annoying, but that's what they do.

Should be a toxicology class maybe, meddling with poisons one way or the other, the one who is very stealthy and has loads of escapes engages but dies fast when focused. Since these are just base classes atleast.

If the gameplay preview video is anything to go by the rogue class does appear to have access to stealth. It seems like taking damage (and I would assume dealing damage) reveals the rogue.

i am hoping for high mobility, fast attacks and high outplay potential through evading attacks, jukeing and kiting, while being squishy. The gameplay in the trailer looks promising 🙂

I'm hoping they have more of an Assassin. Super squishy, super stealthy and super powerful one-shots but almost useless in a straight fight. Perception counteracts stealth and of course any attacks made/damage taken kicks you out of stealth. Stealth in, hit for massive damage, escape or die. I'm just hoping for specialised classes again, where you need to form a party or you won't get far.

Whenever I play a rogue type class I always dual wield daggers.  To me that is the quintessential rogue/thief/assassin.  I never liked dual sword wielding for the class as to me it just didn't fit.  I do however think that claw/fist type weapons can work, just need to figure out how, or if, they can do the signature backstab (if that is going to be a thing).  I really don't want to see the ability to stun lock a target for an easy kill.  Any stun skills should be on the same cd and the cd should be longer than the stun imo.  I'm sounding like I want to nerf the class here but I just think it should be more about skill than just one shotting with a backstab from stealth or stun lock a target to death.

Full disclosure here I don't main rogue type classes I play them as alt to get the different playstyle.

As with any game it's all a matter of balance and that will take time.

as an ESO player let me state one thing. a 300 pound fighter in full plate should not be able to kneel on the battleground and disappear. one of the biggest complaints I have with ESO... that and they have NO real counter play for stealth. please not here... this combat looks great and I wanna gank soft squishy sorcs 🙂

My 2 cents...

  • Dual weapon wielding should be exclusive to rogues. With damage from two weapons combined, they automatically would have high damage output.
  • Should have low Health but some Bloodthirst/Life Leech type skill for sustain as long as they keep hitting their targets.
  • Should be weak to crowd control effects and rely on dodge or proper timing of counter skills to avoid being CCed to death.
  • Stealth is a must. But there should also be True Sight like skills in the game to detect stealth. If stealth detection items are introduced in the game, they should be expensive, hard to get and have their effects lasting for 10 secs with a 1 min cooldown (or something similar). Some kind of legendary gear (or gear enhancement) for permanent stealth detection would be cool too, if it is extremely hard to achieve (e.g. drops from a dungeon boss with very low chance).
  • Should have access to the most potent poisons in the game as well as some Antidote or cure poison skill.
  • Should be able to poison themselves and gain Berserk status dealing high damage with fast attack speed for some time (45 secs? 60secs?) while losing health slowly.
  • To use poison skills they should require items like Poison bottles which should be craft-able from a variety of mob drops. Drops from higher level mobs should make more potent Poison bottles.
  • Should be able to use Poison bottle items to enchant their blades (weapons) with poison property, thus randomly poisoning enemies while attacking by some % chance for the duration of the buff.
  • Anyone other than rogues/assassins should take increased damage from poison bottles (with high level poison items even insta-killing on use).
  • Poison status should drain % health in ticks (instead of absolute dmg) based on the potency of the poison used during the de-buff duration.
  • Antidote items/skills should be able to cure poison status early.

As long as there is a HEAVY poison/toxin based rogue subclass I will be happy, I want poison that i can chuck on the ground for AoE, DoTs, slows, debuffs galore.

Oh ya, that's a good idea too. Some kinda poison smoke bomb that can create an AOE for a few seconds would be cool too.

Since Oath seems more about actual dodging than Evasion stats on items, I'd hope for them to get more dodges/further dodges. And maybe some blinks in and out of a fight/stealth.
And combined with that i hope they get a lot of DoT-Effects and Soft-CC:

- Poison

- Sickness

- Bleed

- Cripple

- Tripple

- Slow

I hope for a simple warrior spec more dps and lower dmg by hit fast dashes and full pve functionallity, we have enough games with pvp assassins. Maybe lesser armor than a warrior but lifeleech on weapon, somethink like that.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm strongly hoping against any kind of invisibility.

I played an MMO and facing invisible Rogues was more annoying than fun.

I then switched to said Rogue class and felt cheap for running around invisible.

The stealth mechanic always seems to be a balancing nightmare.

So I'm hoping for high single target damage and maybe some DoT. Keragi also mentioned a Life Leech weapon, I think that'd be a good fit, especially combined with DoT.

An escape mechanic other than invisibility would be a great utility.

Imo there should be some stealth. However, i think the focus should be on mobility, because too much stealth could be annoying. Maybe a few skills with stealth, but the majority should be mobility related imo. As for ideas for stealth skills, i think one could be invisibility, but it cant be used for a period of time after taking damage. This way its only an ambush, not an escape. This could be something to test atleast, but there is a very real possibility it would be too hard to balance, and that's perfectly understandable. Also, there could be some stealth mechanics other than straight up invisibility. I would qualify this as stealth, if the term is used liberally, what if you could create a clone illusion. That could allow you to get away, or make opponents unable predict from which way the attack is coming, or either if they want.
